Error codes · Maytag · Refrigerators

Maytag refrigerator error codes: nearly every code is a mode someone turned on.

A Maytag refrigerator prints almost no fault codes on its display — the service codes live in a diagnostic mode a technician enters. What the panel does show are states: Cooling Off, Showroom, Sabbath, a door alarm, PO after an outage, a filter reminder. Each is listed below with the buttons that clear it; a refrigerator that is warm with a blank, normal display belongs to the refrigerator troubleshooting page.

Covers: 2015-and-newer French-door (MFI, MFF, MFX), side-by-side (MSS, MSC) and top-freezer (MRT) refrigerators with a display or a button panel.

Maytag · First

Before you clear it

Maytag prints F-and-E codes like Whirlpool (F9E1); top-load washers also print two-letter codes (Lid, dL, LF, Ld).

1

The display prints words or short codes (PO, SHOWROOM, SAb, Cooling Off); a top-freezer or a side-by-side with dial controls prints nothing at all — its only signals are a light and a beep.

2

The reset: unplug the refrigerator (or switch its breaker off) for five full minutes, plug it in, and give the compressor 24 hours before judging the temperatures. Food in a closed freezer keeps two to three hours.

3

The diagnostic: these refrigerators read their sensors and fault memory back through a service mode entered from the panel; the sequence is on the tech sheet taped behind the base grille or inside the fresh-food compartment and differs by model, so we leave it to the technician rather than print one that may not fit yours.

4

The model and serial plate is inside the fresh-food compartment — on the left wall or the ceiling near the top on a French-door or side-by-side, on the compartment wall on a top-freezer. Write both down before any call.

5

A Wi-Fi model shows the same alerts in the Maytag app — a door left open, a filter due, a power outage.

Modes someone turned on

Cooling Off#1

Also printed as Cooling is turned off · OFF

Fix at home
Code

Cooling turned off

What it means

Not a fault. Someone held the two buttons that switch the cooling off — while cleaning, or a child at the panel. The lights, the display and the dispenser work; the compressor does not run.

Check first
  1. The display reads Cooling Off, or the temperature readouts show dashes.
  2. Press and hold the two buttons the panel marks for cooling on/off — on most of these, Lock and Filter together for three seconds; the panel's own label or the manual names the pair on yours.
The fix

The display returns to the set temperatures and the compressor starts within a few minutes. Give it 24 hours to pull down.

SHOWROOM#2

Also printed as Showroom · dEMO · Demo

Fix at home
Code

Showroom (demo) mode

What it means

Not a fault. The panel and the lights work for a sales floor but the cooling is switched off. A refrigerator that comes off a floor display or out of an outlet load sometimes arrives this way.

Check first
  1. The display shows SHOWROOM or Demo, or every readout works and nothing gets cold.
  2. Press and hold the button pair the manual names for showroom mode (commonly Lock with Measured Fill, or Lock with the Light key) for three seconds until the word leaves the display.
The fix

Cooling starts; allow 24 hours. If the manual's pair does nothing, a technician exits it from the service mode.

SAb#3

Also printed as Sabbath · Sab

Fix at home
Code

Sabbath mode

What it means

Not a fault. The lights, the display, the ice maker and the alarms are off for the Sabbath while the cooling runs as set.

Check first
  1. The display reads SAb or Sabbath, and the interior light stays off with the door open.
  2. Press and hold the buttons the panel marks for Sabbath (on most, the two freezer temperature keys, or Lock with a temperature key) for three seconds.
The fix

The display, the lights and the ice maker come back; on most models the mode also ends by itself after about 72 hours.

Fast Cool#4

Also printed as Fast Ice

Fix at home
Code

Fast Cool or Fast Ice on

What it means

Not a fault. Fast Cool drops the fresh-food section to its coldest for several hours after a grocery load; Fast Ice runs the freezer colder for about a day to speed the ice maker. The compressor runs more and the readouts sit low.

Check first
  1. The indicator on the panel is lit; press the button once to turn it off, or let it time out (a few hours for Fast Cool, about 24 for Fast Ice).
The fix

Nothing to fix; the set temperatures return when it ends.

Lock#5

Also printed as Locked · Key Lock

Fix at home
Code

Control lock on

What it means

Not a fault. The dispenser and the panel are locked so a child cannot pour water or change a setting; the display shows a padlock.

Check first
  1. Press and hold Lock for three seconds until the padlock goes out.
The fix

The dispenser and the panel answer again.

Alerts the refrigerator raises

Door Ajar#6

Also printed as Door Open · door alarm

Fix at home
Code

Door alarm

What it means

A door switch has read a door open for more than about five minutes — the panel beeps, and a display model prints Door Ajar.

Check first
  1. Every door and the freezer drawer close flat — a crisper drawer pushed out, or a bag in the freezer basket, holds the drawer a half inch open.
  2. The gasket is clean and seals: close the door on a dollar bill and pull; it should drag the whole way around.
  3. The refrigerator leans back a little so the doors swing shut on their own — the front leveling feet are turned out a quarter turn more than the back.
  4. With every door closed and the alarm still going, the door switch (the plunger in the frame) is stuck in.
The fix

Close the doors and press any button to silence it. A door switch that reads open with the door shut is a part.

PO#7

Also printed as Power Outage

Fix at home
Code

Power outage indicator

What it means

Not a fault. The power went off and came back; the refrigerator says so, so the food can be checked.

Check first
  1. Press any button (on some panels, the key under PO, or Confirm) to clear it.
  2. Look in the freezer — frost on the packages or soft ice cream means the outage ran long; whether the food is still good is a judgment call for you, not the refrigerator.
The fix

Nothing to fix. PO with no outage in the house is a plug loose in the outlet or a breaker that is tripping.

Replace Filter#8

Also printed as Order Filter · Filter

Fix at home
Code

Filter reminder

What it means

Not a fault. Six months, or a set volume of water, has passed through the water filter; the light goes from Order to Replace.

Check first
  1. Change the filter (the cartridge sits in the ceiling behind the door, or in the base grille; turn or pull as the cap shows) and run two gallons through the dispenser to purge the air.
  2. Press and hold Filter (or Filter Reset) for three seconds until the light goes out.
The fix

The counter restarts. A filter light that comes back inside a month is a counter that was never reset.

Warranty · When to file

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call Maytag's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

Nothing on this page is a straight service call — every code here starts with a check you can make.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
