Error codes · GE · Washers

GE washer error codes: few codes print — most of what shows is the fill, the drain or the lid.

GE washers say less than most: a front-load prints a short E code, and a top-load mostly talks with its lights. The four badges — GE, GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint — run one control family, so a code means the same thing on all of them. Find yours below, take the checks in order, and reset before you call; the codes that need a technician say so.

Covers: 2015-and-newer top-load (GTW335, GTW465, GTW485, GTW500, GTW680, GTW720, GTW840, PTW600, PTW700, PTW900, Hotpoint HTW240) and front-load (GFW450, GFW550, GFW650, GFW850, PFW870, PFW950, the UltraFresh line, the Profile UltraFast combo PFQ97) washers under the GE, GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint badges.

Before you clear it

GE prints a code on the display (E22, F7, dE); a machine with no display blinks a light pattern — count the blinks and read the manual's table.

1

A front-load prints an E code on the display (E22, E31); a top-load with a knob and lights blinks a cycle light instead — the Lid Lock light flashing is the one most people call about. The tables carry both.

2

The reset: press Power off, unplug the washer (or switch its breaker off) for one full minute, plug it back in and start a Rinse + Spin. A code that comes straight back is real; one that stays gone was a one-off.

3

A Wi-Fi model shows the same code and its next step in the SmartHQ app under the washer's tile — worth a look before you reset, because the reset clears the display.

4

A top-load locks its lid and sits with Sensing lit for a minute or two before any water comes in, and may spin the empty basket briefly first. That is the load being weighed, not a fault.

5

The model and serial plate is inside the door opening on a front-load and under the lid at the front of the frame (or on the back panel) on a top-load. Every warranty call starts with those two numbers.

Section 1 of 3

Water in, water out (front-load E codes)

A front-load code not in this table is inside the cabinet — the door lock, the motor or the boards. Reset once; if it comes back, write it down with the model and serial and call it in.

Fill took too long

What it means

The washer waited for the fill and the water level never rose in time. Nearly always the water is not reaching the valve the way it should.

Check first
  1. Both taps behind the washer are fully open, hot and cold — a tap a quarter turn open fills so slowly the control gives up.
  2. The fill hoses are not kinked or crushed behind the machine, and the little mesh screens where each hose meets the washer are clean (turn the hose off and unscrew it, pull the screen with pliers, rinse).
  3. A faucet at the nearest sink runs with normal pressure; a well pump or a house filter that has dropped the pressure stalls the fill.
  4. The hoses are on the right inlets — hot to hot, cold to cold. Swapped hoses make the washer wait on water at a temperature it never gets.
The fix

Open the taps all the way, clean the inlet screens, straighten the hoses, then reset and run a Rinse + Spin. If every tap is open, the screens are clean and the pressure is good, the inlet valve on the washer is not opening — that is a part, and on a machine under warranty a warranty call.

Will not drain

What it means

The pump ran and the water level did not drop in time. The hose, the standpipe or the pump filter is the usual cause.

Check first
  1. The drain hose is not kinked or crushed behind the washer, and it sits only 4–6 inches into the standpipe — pushed to the bottom, it siphons and cannot pump against itself.
  2. The pump filter, on a model that has one behind the small door at the bottom front (the newer UltraFresh front-loads do): put a towel and a pan down, turn the cap out, pull the coin, the sock, the hair tie, rinse it and screw it back in snug.
  3. The standpipe itself drains — pour a bucket of water down it; if it backs up, the house drain is clogged, not the washer.
  4. Suds. Too much detergent, or detergent that is not HE, makes a foam the pump cannot move; run a Rinse + Spin with nothing added.
The fix

Clear the hose, the filter or the drain and run Spin. A pump that hums and moves nothing with a clear hose is the drain pump — a part, and on a machine under warranty a warranty call.

Section 2 of 3

The lid and the load (top-load lights)

Lid not locked

What it means

The washer tried to start and the lid lock did not report locked. The lid is open, something is holding it up, or the lock's strike missed.

Check first
  1. Close the lid firmly with nothing on top of it — a basket, a bottle or a folded towel keeps it from seating.
  2. The load is not piled above the rim of the basket; a comforter that pushes the lid up stops the lock.
  3. The strike (the tab on the lid) and the slot it drops into are clean — detergent residue stops the lock from engaging.
  4. Unplug the washer for one minute and try again.
The fix

A lid that closes flat and still flashes after a reset has a lid lock assembly that is not reporting — a part. The light stops flashing once the lock is replaced.

Lid will not open

What it means

The lid lock is holding after the cycle. It releases once the basket has fully stopped, and a lock stuck past that is the lock itself.

Check first
  1. Wait two full minutes with the washer on — the lock does not release until the basket stops turning.
  2. Press Start/Pause once; a cycle that was paused keeps the lid locked.
  3. Unplug the washer for one minute; the lock drops when the power goes.
The fix

If the lid stays locked after a one-minute unplug, the lid lock assembly is the part. Do not pry the lid — the strike bends and the new lock will not catch.

Stop & call

A lid still locked after a one-minute unplug is a service call, and on a machine under warranty a warranty call. Nothing else to try at home.

Unbalanced load

What it means

The basket could not get up to spin speed without knocking the cabinet, so the washer stopped and asked for help with the load.

Check first
  1. Open the lid and spread the load. One heavy item — a bath mat, a comforter, a pair of jeans alone — needs two or three towels beside it.
  2. A packed basket cannot balance; take some out.
  3. The washer sits flat on all four feet. Rock it corner to corner; a foot off the floor is turned down until it stops rocking, then its lock nut is tightened.
The fix

Rebalance the load, close the lid and press Start — the washer picks up at the spin. If a level washer with a normal load stops on every spin, the suspension rods are worn — a part.

Section 3 of 3

Power and the panel

LOC#6
Fix at home
Code

Control lock is on

What it means

Not a fault. The panel is locked so a child cannot change the cycle; the display reads LOC or shows the lock light.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the pad marked Lock Controls for three seconds (the panel prints which pad; on most it is the one with the padlock).
The fix

The lock turns off and the panel answers again.

Sensing#7
Fix at home
Code

Load sensing

What it means

Not a fault. The washer is weighing the load before it fills — the lid is locked, the basket may turn a few times, and nothing happens for a minute or two.

Check first
  1. Wait. The fill starts by itself once the sensing is done; on a top-load the whole pause is under three minutes.
The fix

Nothing to fix. A washer that sits in Sensing for more than five minutes with the taps open and never fills is reading as the fill fault above.

No lights#8
Check, then call
Code

Nothing on the panel

What it means

The control is getting no power — the outlet, the breaker or the cord — or the control itself has failed.

Check first
  1. The breaker for the laundry outlet is on; turn it fully off and back on, since a tripped breaker can sit in the middle.
  2. A lamp plugged into the washer's outlet lights — many laundry rooms sit on a GFCI outlet (the one with the two buttons), which trips and takes the washer with it; press Reset on it.
  3. The plug is pushed all the way into the outlet and the cord is not pinched behind the machine.
The fix

Fix the supply and the panel comes back. A washer on a live outlet with no lights has a failed control or an open line filter inside the cabinet — a service call, and on a machine under warranty a warranty call.

Stop & call

A dead panel on a live outlet is a service call — the parts are inside the cabinet and the line filter carries house voltage, so nothing comes apart at home.

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call GE's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

Nothing on this page is a straight service call — every code here starts with a check you can make.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
