Error codes · GE · Refrigerators

GE refrigerator error codes: the display mostly tells you about a door, a filter or a mode — not a broken part.

A GE refrigerator's display does not print fault codes the way a washer does. What it shows is a state: cooling turned off, showroom mode, a temperature flashing after a door was left open, a filter due, the ice maker switched off. The four badges — GE, GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint — run one control, so the words read the same on all of them. Most of these clear with one press-and-hold, and the page says which; a refrigerator that is warm with none of them showing is a service call, and the temperature entry says what to tell them.

Covers: 2015-and-newer French-door (GFE, GNE, GYE, PFE, PVD, PYE, CFE, CVE), side-by-side (GSE, GSS, GZS, PSE, PZS, CZS) and top-freezer (GTE, GTS, GIE, Hotpoint HPS) refrigerators under the GE, GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint badges.

GE · First

Before you clear it

GE prints a code on the display (E22, F7, dE); a machine with no display blinks a light pattern — count the blinks and read the manual's table.

1

The display prints words and temperatures, not codes: OFF in both windows, Showroom, a flashing number, the padlock, Replace Filter, Ice Off. A refrigerator that is warm with no words showing is under the flashing-temperature entry.

2

The reset: unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its breaker) for one full minute, plug it back in and give it 24 hours before judging the temperatures — a fridge pulls down slowly, and the first hours after a reset run the fan and the compressor hard.

3

A Wi-Fi model shows the same states, the door-open alert and the filter life in the SmartHQ app under the refrigerator's tile.

4

Any change to a setting — cooling on, showroom mode off, the ice maker on — takes a press-and-hold of about three seconds on a pad panel; a single tap does nothing, which is how the settings stay put in a house with children. An LCD panel keeps the same settings under its Settings menu.

5

The model and serial plate is inside the fresh-food section, on the left wall near the top (on some top-freezer models, on the ceiling). Every warranty call starts with those two numbers.

Modes the display names

OFF#1
Fix at home
Code

Cooling is turned off

What it means

Not a fault. Both temperature windows read OFF; the lights, the display and the dispenser work, and the compressor and fans stay off. Someone turned the cooling off — for a cleaning, a move or by holding the wrong pads.

Check first
  1. The display reads OFF where the two temperatures usually sit, and the fridge is quiet with the lights on.
  2. On a Wi-Fi model the SmartHQ app shows cooling off under the refrigerator's tile.
The fix

Press and hold the pads the panel marks for cooling (on most pad panels, the two temperature pads together for three seconds; on an LCD panel, Settings → Cooling On). The temperatures come back on the display and the compressor starts inside a minute. Give it 24 hours to pull down.

Showroom#2
Fix at home
Code

Showroom (demo) mode

What it means

Not a fault. The mode a store floor uses: the display, the lights and the dispenser work and nothing cools. A new refrigerator, or one a child's hands found the right pads on, can land here.

Check first
  1. The display reads Showroom (or Demo) and the compressor never runs, though the lights and the panel answer.
  2. A refrigerator fresh from the store or a reset is the usual case.
The fix

On an LCD panel, Settings → Showroom Mode off. On a pad panel the manual names the two pads to hold together for three seconds; the word leaves the display and cooling starts. Give it 24 hours to pull down.

Sabbath#3
Fix at home
Code

Sabbath mode on

What it means

Not a fault. The lights stay off, the display goes dark, the alarms and the dispenser are quiet, and the cooling runs on its own schedule with no response to the doors.

Check first
  1. The interior light does not come on with the door, and the panel shows the Sabbath word or icon with nothing else.
The fix

Press and hold the Sabbath pad for three seconds, or turn it off under Settings on an LCD panel. Everything answers again at once.

Padlock#4
Fix at home
Code

Control lock on

What it means

Not a fault. The dispenser and the panel pads are locked; the padlock icon is lit and a press does nothing.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the Lock pad for three seconds (the panel prints it with the padlock; on a dispenser it is often the same pad as the light).
The fix

The padlock goes dark and the dispenser and pads answer again.

Turbo Cool#5

Also printed as Turbo Freeze

Fix at home
Code

Turbo mode running

What it means

Not a fault. Turbo Cool (fresh food) or Turbo Freeze (freezer) runs the compressor and fans hard for several hours to pull down after a big load of groceries. The refrigerator runs loud and nonstop while it is on, then turns it off by itself.

Check first
  1. The Turbo word or icon is lit on the panel; the fridge is noticeably cold and the fans never stop.
The fix

Nothing to fix. Press the Turbo pad again to end it early; it ends on its own otherwise.

Section 2 of 2

Alerts

Temperature flashing#6
Check, then call
Code

High-temperature alert

What it means

The compartment went warmer than it should — a door left open, a power outage, a big load of warm food — and the display flashes the temperature (some models beep) until a pad is pressed.

Check first
  1. Both doors and the freezer drawer close fully and seal: a crisper drawer not pushed in, a jug on the door shelf, or a bag at the back stops a door an inch short and the fridge never knows.
  2. Press any pad to clear the flashing, then check the real temperatures with a thermometer in a glass of water: 37°F in the fresh food and 0°F in the freezer after 24 hours is right.
  3. The condenser coils are clear: pull the base grille at the bottom front (or pull the fridge out and look at the back) and vacuum the dust off the coils — a fridge breathes through them, and a matted coil runs warm all day.
  4. The freezer fan runs when the door is held open and its switch is pressed; frost coating the back wall of the freezer means the defrost has stopped.
The fix

Clear the alert, close the doors, clean the coils and give it 24 hours. A refrigerator that stays warm with the doors sealed, the coils clean and the compressor running is a cooling fault — the condenser fan, the defrost system or the sealed system — a service call, and on a machine under warranty a warranty call. Move the food to a cooler or a neighbor's freezer while you wait.

Stop & call

Warm with the doors sealed, the coils clean and the compressor running is a service call. Tell them the two temperatures you measured and whether the back wall of the freezer is frosted — that one sentence saves a second visit.

Door alarm#7
Fix at home
Code

Door open alarm

What it means

A door or drawer has been open for a few minutes and the refrigerator is beeping, with the door icon flashing on some panels. A door that is shut and still alarms is the door switch.

Check first
  1. Close every door and the freezer drawer with a firm push; look for what stopped it — a drawer not pushed home, a jug, a bag at the back.
  2. The refrigerator is level front to back with a slight lean to the rear, so the doors swing shut on their own; a fridge leaning forward leaves a door ajar every time.
  3. The door gasket is clean and not folded under; wipe it with warm soapy water and press it back into its channel.
The fix

Close the door and the beeping stops. A door that is shut flat and still alarms has a door switch that is not reading — on most models a magnet in the door and a sensor in the frame — a part.

Replace Filter#8

Also printed as Filter

Fix at home
Code

Water filter due

What it means

Not a fault. The filter's six months are up and the display says so; water and ice keep coming on most models, slower as the filter clogs. The RFID models (XWFE, RPWFE filters) read a chip in the filter and will not dispense with a filter that has no chip.

Check first
  1. The filter's model is printed on the old filter (MWF, XWFE, RPWFE and MSWF are the common GE ones) — match it exactly.
  2. On an RFID model the display complains and the water stops until a matching filter is in; a generic filter without the chip is the usual cause.
The fix

Fit the new filter (turn it a quarter turn, a cup of water run through to clear the air), then press and hold Reset Filter for three seconds until the light clears. The water will sputter for the first few glasses.

Ice Off#9
Fix at home
Code

Ice maker switched off

What it means

Not a fault. The ice maker is turned off at the panel (or by the switch or feeler arm on the ice maker itself), and no ice will come until it is turned on.

Check first
  1. The Ice Off indicator is lit on the panel, or the ice maker's own power switch (on the side of the ice maker in the freezer, on models that have one) is off, or its wire feeler arm is up.
  2. A new refrigerator takes 24 hours to make its first batch after the ice maker is turned on, and the first two batches go in the trash.
  3. The water line behind the fridge is open at its valve and the filter is in place — an ice maker with no water fills with nothing.
The fix

Press and hold the Ice pad for three seconds (or flip the switch, or lower the arm) and wait 24 hours. An ice maker that is on, with water and a cold freezer, that makes nothing in two days is the ice maker assembly or its water valve — a part.

Warranty · When to file

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call GE's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

Nothing on this page is a straight service call — every code here starts with a check you can make.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
