Error codes · Bosch · Dryers

Bosch dryer error codes: most of them are the fluff filter, the water container, or the heat exchanger.

A Bosch compact dryer has no vent — it pulls the water out of the clothes into a container (or a drain hose) and prints very few codes. What it shows are reminders: empty the container, clean the fluff filter, clean the heat exchanger. Find the message below and take the checks in order; a numbered E code is the one thing on this page that is a technician's.

Covers: 2015-and-newer 24-inch compact dryers — the condensation 300 series (WTG86400UC, WTG86403UC) and the heat-pump 500 and 800 series (WTW87NH1UC, WQB245B0UC, WQB245B1UC).

Before you clear it

Bosch prints E codes (E15, E24, E25). A dishwasher with no display blinks the Clean or Rinse light; the manual's table reads the pattern.

1

The messages print as words on the display (Empty container, Clean filter, Clean heat exchanger) or as a lit symbol on a 300 series panel — a water drop, a fluff filter, a plate with a grid. A fault prints E followed by a number.

2

The reset: turn the dial to Off, then switch the dryer's double breaker off for one full minute — a compact Bosch dryer runs on 240V from a wall outlet behind it, so the breaker, not the plug. Power it up and start a timed program with the drum empty. A message that comes straight back is real.

3

The container sits in the top left of the front (pull the drawer out by its handle) and holds about a load's worth of water; a dryer plumbed to a drain with the hose kit never fills it. A dryer that stops mid-cycle with wet clothes and no message has a full container on a model that only lights the symbol.

4

A Home Connect model (the 800 series heat-pump dryers) shows the message, its meaning and the next step in the Home Connect app. The model plate — the E-Nr and the FD number — is inside the door rim.

5

The 240V outlet, the breaker and the cord's plug are an electrician's; a stacked pair needs the stacking kit from Bosch, never a shelf.

The reminders the dryer prints

Empty container#1

Water container full

What it means

Not a fault. The container that collects the water pulled from the clothes is full and the dryer stops until it is emptied — about every load on a condensation model, less often on a heat-pump model.

Check first
  1. Pull the container out by its handle (top left of the front), pour it out, slide it back until it seats — the message clears when it clicks home.
  2. A container that fills every load on a dryer plumbed to a drain: the drain hose is kinked, lifted above the dryer, or pushed too far into the standpipe so it cannot run off.
  3. A container that never fills and clothes come out damp: the dryer is not condensing — see Clean heat exchanger below.
The fix

Empty it and press Start to carry on; a cycle interrupted by a full container finishes where it left off. The drain hose kit from Bosch takes the container out of the routine for good — the hose end goes into the standpipe or a sink tailpiece, never below the floor.

Clean filter#2

Fluff filter needs cleaning

What it means

Not a fault. The two-part fluff filter in the door opening has lint on it — the dryer prints this after every cycle on most models, and stops early with damp clothes when the filter is actually blocked.

Check first
  1. Open the door, lift the filter out of the opening by its handle, fold the two halves apart and strip the lint from both screens.
  2. Rinse it under warm water when the lint will not strip clean, dry it, and fold it back together before it goes in.
  3. A 300 series dryer also has a fine filter behind the base flap — see Clean heat exchanger below; a heat-pump model has a second filter in the heat exchanger door at the bottom left, cleaned every few cycles.
The fix

A clean filter clears the message on the next start. Lint left on the screens is the one thing that makes a compact dryer run long and leave clothes damp.

Heat exchanger needs cleaning

What it means

Not a fault. On a condensation dryer the heat exchanger (the finned block behind the flap at the bottom left of the front) has fluff packed in its fins and cannot condense — clothes come out damp and the cycle runs long. A heat-pump model cleans its own exchanger and prints a filter reminder instead.

Check first
  1. Open the flap at the bottom left, turn the locking levers and pull the heat exchanger out by its handle; a little water comes with it, so a towel first.
  2. Hold it under the shower or a tap and wash the fluff out of the fins from the back side; the fins bend, so no brush.
  3. Let it drain, slide it back in until it stops, lock the levers and close the flap — levers left open print the message again.
The fix

A clean exchanger clears the message and brings the drying time back. Every month in normal use; a dryer that still dries slowly with a clean exchanger and a clean filter has a fan or a pump fault — a technician's look.

Door open#4

Door open

What it means

Not a fault. The dryer will not start, or stopped, because the door switch does not report closed.

Check first
  1. Push the door shut until it clicks; a sock caught in the opening, or the fluff filter not seated flat, keeps it from latching.
  2. A door that clicks and still shows the message after a power cut is the door switch — a part.
The fix

Close the door and press Start — the cycle picks up where it stopped. A switch that does not report is replaced from inside the door frame, a technician's job.

Key symbol#5

Also printed as Lock symbol

Fix at home
Code

Childproof lock is on

What it means

Not a fault. The panel is locked so a child cannot change the program — the key symbol shows in the display and the keys do nothing.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the key the panel marks with the key symbol (Start/Pause on most models, or the two keys printed with it) for about five seconds until the symbol goes out.
The fix

The lock turns off and the panel answers again.

Section 2 of 2

A numbered code

A compact Bosch dryer that tumbles and never warms with no message at all is the heater on a condensation model or the compressor on a heat-pump model — both parts inside the cabinet, a technician's. A burnt smell at the dryer is stop and cut the power now.

Service call
Code

Technical fault

What it means

The control found a fault it reports as E and a number. Bosch publishes the dryer's numbered codes as technical faults with no home check — the number tells the technician which part, not the owner.

Check first
  1. Turn the dial to Off and switch the breaker off for five full minutes, then power up and start a timed program with the drum empty.
  2. Write the number down exactly as it printed, and whether it showed at the start or mid-cycle.
The fix

A numbered code that returns after a five-minute power cut is a part inside the cabinet — the control, a sensor, the fan or the pump. A service call.

Stop & call

An E code after the five-minute reset is a service call. On a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call; file it with the number, the E-Nr and the FD off the door plate.

Warranty · When to file

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call Bosch's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
