Error codes · Whirlpool · Washers

Whirlpool washer error codes: most of them are the fill, the drain, or the lid.

Whirlpool washers print an F-and-E code on a display and a two-letter code on a top-load without one, and the same fault wears both spellings — LF on the dial model is F8E1 on the one with a screen. Most of them point at the hoses, the drain or a lid that will not latch. Find the code below, work the checks in order, and clear it with the reset in the strip above the table; the ones that need a technician say so.

Covers: 2015-and-newer front-load (WFW5620, WFW5605, WFW6620, WFW8620, WFW9620, WFW5720 and the 24-inch compact) and top-load (WTW4816, WTW4855, WTW4955, WTW5000, WTW5057, WTW5105, WTW6120, WTW7120, WTW8127) washers.

Whirlpool · First

Before you clear it

Whirlpool prints an F code with an E code (F9 E1, shown as F9E1). The F names the system, the E names the fault inside it.

1

Two spellings, one fault. A display prints F8E1 (some show it as F8 E1); a top-load with a dial and status lights prints LF for the same thing. The tables list the letter code as the alias — look for either.

2

The reset: press Power (or turn the dial to off), unplug the washer or switch its breaker off for one full minute, plug it back in and run Drain & Spin (Rinse & Spin on a front-load). A code that comes straight back is real; one that stays gone was a one-off.

3

A top-load with no display shows the fault only through its lights — Lid Locked flashing is the lid or its lock, every light flashing together is a fault the service diagnostic names. The tech sheet is folded inside the console (pull the top panel forward) and it is written for a technician; the code history lives there.

4

A Wi-Fi model shows the code and the next step in the Whirlpool app under the washer's tile.

5

The model and serial plate is inside the door rim on a front-load and under the lid on the rim of the tub opening on a top-load. Every warranty call starts with those two numbers.

Long fill — no water

What it means

The washer waited for the fill and the water level never got where it should. On a dial top-load the same wait prints LF. Nearly always the water is not reaching the valve.

Check first
  1. Both taps behind the washer are fully open, hot and cold — a tap a quarter turn open fills so slowly the control gives up.
  2. The fill hoses are not kinked behind the machine, and the mesh screens where each hose meets the washer are clean (shut the taps, unscrew the hose, pull the screen with pliers, rinse).
  3. A faucet at the nearest sink runs with normal pressure; a well pump or a house filter that has dropped the pressure stalls the fill.
  4. Top-load: the water is actually reaching the basket. Some water in the tub and LF anyway means the pressure is low; no water at all with open taps means the valve.
The fix

Open the taps all the way, clean the inlet screens, straighten the hoses, then reset and run a cycle. If every tap is open, the screens are clean and the pressure is good, the inlet valve on the washer is not opening — that is a part, and on a machine under warranty a warranty call.

Long drain

What it means

The pump ran and the water level did not drop in the time the control allows. On a dial top-load it prints Ld.

Check first
  1. The drain hose is not kinked or crushed behind the washer, and it sits only 4–6 inches into the standpipe — pushed to the bottom, it siphons and the pump cannot push against it.
  2. Front-load: the pump filter behind the small door at the bottom front. Towel and pan down, turn the cap out, pull the coin, the sock, the hair tie, rinse it and screw it back in snug.
  3. The standpipe itself drains — pour a bucket of water down it; if it backs up, the house drain is clogged, not the washer.
  4. Suds. Non-HE detergent or too much of it makes a foam the pump cannot move; run a Drain & Spin with nothing added.
The fix

Clear the hose, the filter or the drain and run Drain & Spin. A pump that hums and moves nothing with a clean filter is the pump — a part, and on a machine under warranty a warranty call.

Check, then call
Code

Overfilled

What it means

The water level sensor saw more water than the cycle asked for. Either the inlet valve is not closing or the water came in from the drain.

Check first
  1. Turn both taps off. If the water keeps rising with the taps closed, it is coming from the drain — the hose is pushed too far into a standpipe that backs up.
  2. If the water stops rising with the taps off, the inlet valve is not closing fully.
The fix

Fix the hose depth or the standpipe clog and the code clears. An inlet valve that will not shut is a part — leave the taps off until it is replaced so the floor stays dry.

Stop & call

Water that keeps rising with the taps closed and the drain clear is a valve that cannot shut. Keep the taps off and call it in; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty service call, and never a wait-and-see.

Dispenser fault

What it means

The dispenser's motor did not reach the position the control asked for, so the detergent or the softener was not released when it should have been.

Check first
  1. Pull the dispenser drawer all the way out and wash the caked softener and detergent out of the drawer and the housing behind it.
  2. Load & Go models: the detergent cartridge is seated all the way down and its cap is on; a half-seated cartridge blocks the dispenser arm.
  3. Reset (unplug one minute) and run a short cycle.
The fix

A clean drawer that still throws F8E2 is the dispenser motor or its linkage — a part inside the top of the washer, a technician's job. The washer still washes meanwhile with the detergent put straight in the drum.

Stop & call

F8E2 after a cleaning and a reset is a service call on the dispenser motor. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call.

Too many suds

What it means

The washer paused to let the foam settle and could not clear it. Too much detergent, or detergent that is not HE. A dial top-load prints Sd.

Check first
  1. The detergent is HE (the hE logo on the bottle) and the dose is the cap's lowest line — about two tablespoons for a normal load.
  2. The drawer is not caked in old softener.
  3. The drain hose is not pushed to the bottom of the standpipe — foam that cannot leave looks like more foam.
The fix

Let it finish; the washer adds rinses by itself. Next load: HE detergent, half the dose. A Drain & Spin with nothing in it clears the leftover foam.

Water level sensor

What it means

The control cannot read the water level. The sensor's air hose has come off, is pinched, or the pressure sensor itself has failed.

Check first
  1. Reset the washer (unplug one minute) and run a Drain & Spin. A sensor fault that clears and stays gone was a power blip.
The fix

If it comes back, this is a part inside the console — a technician reseats the hose or replaces the pressure sensor. Not a home repair.

Stop & call

A level sensor code that returns after a reset is a service call. Write the code down, note the model and serial, and on a machine under warranty file it as a warranty call.

The door, the lid and the load

Door or lid not closed

What it means

Start was pressed and the door or lid switch did not report closed. On a dial top-load the display prints lid.

Check first
  1. Front-load: push the door shut until it clicks. A towel caught in the gasket keeps the latch from seating.
  2. Top-load: close the lid with nothing on top of it, then press Start again — the lid has to be opened and closed once after some codes.
  3. The strike (the metal tab on the lid or door) is straight and the latch opening is clean; detergent residue on the strike stops the switch from seeing it.
  4. Reset (unplug one minute) and try again.
The fix

A door or lid that closes and still prints the code after a reset has a switch that is not reporting — on a front-load the door lock assembly, on a top-load the lid switch inside the lid-lock. That is a part.

Door or lid will not lock

What it means

The control told the lock to engage and the lock never reported locked. A dial top-load prints dL.

Check first
  1. Open and close the door or lid once, firmly, and press Start.
  2. Look at the strike where it enters the lock — bent, or packed with lint or detergent, it never seats.
  3. Nothing is sitting on the lid; a basket on top keeps it from closing flat.
  4. Reset (unplug one minute).
The fix

A clean strike that seats and still prints dL is the lock assembly — a part, replaced under the top panel on a top-load or inside the door opening on a front-load. A technician's job.

Stop & call

dL or F5E2 that returns with the lid closing flat is the lid-lock assembly. On a machine under warranty, file it as a warranty call; the washer will not run a cycle until it is replaced.

Code

Door or lid will not unlock

What it means

The cycle ended and the lock did not release. A dial top-load prints dU.

Check first
  1. Wait two minutes with the washer on — the lock releases once the basket has stopped turning.
  2. Unplug the washer for one minute; the lock drops when the power goes.
  3. Front-load with water still inside: run Drain & Spin first — the door stays locked over a full tub.
The fix

If the door or lid stays locked after a one-minute unplug and an empty tub, the lock assembly is the part. Do not pry the lid.

Stop & call

A lid still locked after the unplug is a stuck lock assembly — a service call, a warranty call on a machine under warranty. Leave the lid alone until then.

Overloaded

What it means

The motor saw a load heavier than the drum can move through a cycle. A dial top-load prints oL.

Check first
  1. Take some of the load out — a top-load wants the basket no more than three quarters full, loosely, and heavy items (a comforter, a rug) on their own with a towel or two.
  2. The load is not wrapped around the agitator or the impeller post.
  3. Press Start to continue, or Power off and on and restart the cycle.
The fix

Lighten the load and run it again. A half-empty basket that still prints oL on every cycle is the drive — a technician looks at the motor and the gearcase.

Unbalanced load

What it means

The basket could not come up to spin speed without hitting the cabinet, so the washer stopped and tried to redistribute. It gives up after a few tries. A dial top-load prints uL.

Check first
  1. Open the lid or door and spread the load. One heavy item alone needs two or three towels beside it.
  2. A packed drum cannot balance; take some out.
  3. A new front-load: the four shipping bolts are out of the back.
  4. The washer sits flat on all four feet. Rock it corner to corner; a foot off the floor is turned down until it stops rocking, then its lock nut tightened.
The fix

Rebalance the load and run Drain & Spin. If a level washer with a normal load prints uL on every cycle, the suspension rods (top-load) or the shock absorbers (front-load) are worn — a part.

Load in the Clean Washer cycle

What it means

Not a fault. The Clean Washer cycle was started with laundry in the drum, so the washer stopped. Older front-loads print rL for the same thing.

Check first
  1. Open the door or lid, take the load out, and start Clean Washer again with the drum empty.
The fix

Nothing to fix. If the drum was empty and it printed anyway, run the reset and try once more; a repeat is the load sensing on the motor — a service call.

Button stuck

What it means

The panel sees a key held down for longer than a key is ever pressed.

Check first
  1. Press each button once; feel for one that does not spring back.
  2. Wipe the panel dry — detergent or softener on a membrane panel holds a key down.
  3. Unplug for one minute.
The fix

A key that stays stuck after a cleaning is the user interface panel — a part. The washer may still start from the Whirlpool app on a Wi-Fi model meanwhile.

Control lock is on

What it means

Not a fault. The panel is locked so a child cannot change the cycle; the display reads LoC or shows the lock light.

Check first
  1. Press and hold the button marked Control Lock (or the one the panel names, usually Cycle Options or Drain & Spin) for three seconds until the lock light goes out.
The fix

The lock turns off and the panel answers again.

Temperature sensor

What it means

The water temperature sensor is reading open or shorted, so the control cannot trust the temperature of the fill.

Check first
  1. Reset the washer (unplug one minute) and run a cold Drain & Spin.
The fix

A temperature code that returns is the sensor or its wiring — a part replaced in the tub, a technician's job.

Stop & call

F3E2 after a reset is a service call — a warranty call on a machine under warranty. The washer may still run cold cycles while you wait.

Motor fault

What it means

The motor did not turn when the control drove it, or its speed sensor reported nothing. A load so heavy the basket could not move prints the same code on a top-load.

Check first
  1. Take half the load out and try again — a stalled basket on a packed top-load is the usual cause.
  2. A new front-load: the shipping bolts are out of the back.
  3. Reset (unplug one minute) and run an empty Drain & Spin. If the basket turns freely by hand but never under power, it is the motor or its board.
The fix

F7E1 with a normal load after a reset is the motor, its speed sensor or the drive board — a service call, not a home repair.

Stop & call

A basket that turns by hand but never under power is a motor or control fault. File it with the code, the model and the serial; on a machine under warranty it is a warranty call.

Check first
  1. Unplug the washer for five full minutes, plug it in and start a Drain & Spin.
The fix

F1E1 that returns is the main control board — a part inside the console, a technician's job.

What it means

The panel and the main control lost communication with each other. F6E3 is the same break seen from the other board.

The fix

A communication code that comes back is a board or the harness between them — a service call.

What it means

Not a fault. The power went out while the washer was running; the cycle stopped where it was.

Check first

The fix

Nothing to fix. PF with no outage in the house is a plug loose in the outlet or an outlet that is failing.

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call Whirlpool's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
