KitchenAid refrigerator error codes: almost everything the panel shows is a mode, not a fault.

A KitchenAid refrigerator keeps its fault codes to itself — they sit in a diagnostic a technician reads — and what the display prints are states: Cooling Off, Showroom, Sabbath, Max Cool, a door alarm, PO after an outage, a filter reminder. Each one below says what it means and the buttons that clear it. A refrigerator that is warm with a normal, quiet display belongs on the refrigerator troubleshooting page.

Covers: 2015-and-newer French-door (KRFF305, KRFF507, KRFC300, KRFC704), five-door (KRMF706), side-by-side (KRSF705, KRSC703) and built-in (KBFN502, KBSD608) refrigerators with a touch display or a dispenser panel.

KitchenAid · First

Before you clear it

KitchenAid prints F-and-E codes; a dishwasher with no display blinks the Clean light in groups that spell the code.

1

What the display prints: words and short codes (Cooling Off, Showroom, PO, Sabbath) on a French-door or side-by-side with the touch panel; the five-door KRMF706 writes them out in full on its screen; a built-in prints them on the panel inside the top of the fresh-food door frame.

2

The reset: unplug the refrigerator (or switch its breaker off) for five full minutes, plug it in, and give the compressor 24 hours before judging the temperatures. A closed freezer keeps its cold for two to three hours; keep the doors shut while you wait.

3

The diagnostic: these refrigerators read their sensors and stored faults back through a service mode entered at the panel, and the key sequence is on the tech sheet folded behind the base grille or inside the fresh-food compartment; it differs by model, so we leave it to the technician rather than print one that may not fit yours.

4

A Wi-Fi model shows the same alerts in the KitchenAid app — a door left open, a filter due, a power outage — and the app's refrigerator tile names the model for you.

5

The model and serial plate is inside the fresh-food compartment, on the left wall or the ceiling near the top; a built-in's sits inside the fresh-food section on the upper wall as well. Write both down before any call.

Switched on at the panel

Cooling Off#1

Also printed as Cooling is Off · OFF

Fix at home

Cooling turned off

What it means

Not a fault. Someone held the two keys that switch the cooling off — while cleaning the shelves, or a child at the panel. The lights and the dispenser work, the display reads Cooling Off, and the compressor sits idle.

Check first
  1. The display says Cooling Off, or the two temperature readouts show dashes instead of numbers.
  2. Press and hold the pair the panel marks for cooling on/off — on most of these Lock and Filter together for three seconds; the panel's own label or the manual names the pair on yours.
The fix

The readouts return and the compressor starts inside a few minutes; allow 24 hours to pull all the way down.

Showroom#2

Showroom (demo) mode

What it means

Not a fault. Every light and readout works for a sales floor, but the cooling is switched off. A refrigerator that came off a floor display, or out of an outlet load, sometimes arrives this way.

Check first
  1. The display shows Showroom, or every setting takes and nothing gets cold after a day.
  2. Press and hold the pair the manual names for showroom mode (on many, Lock with Measured Fill, or Lock with the Light key) for three seconds until the word leaves the display.
The fix

Cooling starts; allow 24 hours. If the manual's pair does nothing on yours, a technician exits it from the service mode.

Sabbath#3

Also printed as Sabbath Mode · SAb

Fix at home
Code

Sabbath mode

What it means

Not a fault. The lights, the display, the tones, the ice maker and the dispenser are off for the Sabbath while the cooling runs as set.

Check first
  1. The display reads Sabbath and the interior light stays off with the door open.
  2. Press and hold the keys the panel marks for it — on most, the two freezer temperature keys together, or Lock with a temperature key — for three seconds.
The fix

The lights, the display and the ice maker come back; on most models the mode also ends by itself after about 72 hours.

Max Cool#4

Also printed as Max Ice · Max Cool/Max Ice

Fix at home

Max Cool or Max Ice

What it means

Not a fault. Max Cool runs the fresh-food section at its coldest for several hours after a grocery run; Max Ice runs the freezer colder for about a day so the ice maker fills faster. The compressor runs more and the readouts sit low while either is on.

Check first
  1. The Max Cool or Max Ice indicator is lit on the panel; press the key once to turn it off, or let it time out on its own.
The fix

Nothing to fix. The set temperatures come back when it ends.

Ice Off#5

Also printed as Ice Maker Off

Fix at home
Code

Ice maker switched off

What it means

Not a fault. The ice maker was turned off at the panel (or its wire arm lifted), so the bin stays empty while everything else runs.

Check first
  1. The Ice Off indicator is lit; press the Ice Maker key (Ice Off on some panels) once until the indicator goes out.
  2. On a maker with a wire arm, the arm is down. A bin left out, or pushed in crooked, holds the arm up on some models.
The fix

The first harvest comes within 24 hours once the freezer is at temperature. An ice maker switched on that makes nothing in a day is the refrigerator troubleshooting page's ice section.

Lock#6

Also printed as Dispenser Lock · Control Lock

Fix at home
Code

Dispenser and panel locked

What it means

Not a fault. The dispenser pads and the panel are locked so a child cannot pour water or change a setting; the padlock is lit.

Check first
  1. Press and hold Lock for three seconds until the padlock goes out.
The fix

The dispenser and the panel answer again. Lock it on purpose before you wipe the panel.

What the refrigerator tells you

Door Ajar#7

Also printed as Door Open · Door Alarm

Fix at home
Code

Door alarm

What it means

A door switch has read a door open for more than about five minutes — the refrigerator beeps, and a display model prints Door Ajar.

Check first
  1. Every door and the freezer drawer close flat. A crisper pulled out an inch, a bag in the freezer basket, or a jar on the door shelf holds a door off its switch.
  2. The gaskets seal: shut each door on a dollar bill and pull it — it should drag all the way around; a corner folded under lets the door sit open a hair.
  3. The refrigerator leans back slightly so the doors swing shut on their own — the front leveling feet turned out a quarter turn further than the rear.
  4. With every door shut tight and the alarm still sounding, the door switch (the small plunger in the frame) is stuck in, or a magnet in the door that trips a reed switch has lost its mate.
The fix

Close the doors and press any key to silence it. A switch that reads open with the door shut is a part.

PO#8

Also printed as Power Outage

Fix at home
Code

Power outage indicator

What it means

Not a fault. The power went off and came back; the refrigerator says so, so the food can be looked at.

Check first
  1. Press the key under PO (Confirm, or OK, on some panels) to clear it.
  2. Look in the freezer: frost on the packages, or ice cream gone soft and refrozen, says the outage ran long; whether the food is still good is your judgment, not the refrigerator's.
The fix

Nothing to fix. PO with no outage in the house is a plug loose in the outlet, or a breaker that is tripping — the second is a licensed electrician's look.

Replace Filter#9

Also printed as Order Filter · Replace Water Filter · Filter

Fix at home
Code

Water filter due

What it means

Not a fault. Six months, or a set volume of water, has gone through the water filter; the light goes from Order to Replace.

Check first
  1. Change the cartridge — it sits in the ceiling of the fresh-food section behind a small door, or in the base grille on a built-in; turn or pull as the cap shows — and run two gallons through the dispenser to push the air out.
  2. Press and hold Filter (Filter Reset on some panels) for three seconds until the light goes out.
The fix

The counter restarts. A filter light that comes back within a month was never reset; one that stays on with a new cartridge is the panel — a part.

Warranty · When to file

When it's a warranty call

Every unit leaves with the manufacturer's full factory warranty. The codes below name a part inside the machine — once the checks have ruled out the install, the power and the hoses, call KitchenAid's line with the model and serial, and text us if you want a hand with the claim.

Nothing on this page is a straight service call — every code here starts with a check you can make.

All units are surplus inventory (open box, cancelled order, customer return, overstock, or minor scratch & dent). Every unit includes the manufacturer's full factory warranty. Please inspect thoroughly in person before purchasing — cosmetic imperfections or missing accessories are possible.

Still stuck?

Text us the model number and what it's doing — we'll point you at the next step.

A fix, a part, or a warranty call — the plate's model and serial plus one line about the symptom is all it takes to tell which.

These pages are educational. Every appliance is a little different — follow the manufacturer's manual and local code, and leave gas, water heater and 240V work to a licensed installer.
